Hit-and-Run Crash on Bridge to Cape Cod Leaves One Dead
On July 4th, as many people celebrated the birth of the nation, a man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the Sagamore Bridge, the gateway to Cape Cod. Injured victims of car accidents involving negligent drivers are entitled to receive compensation for their injuries and losses. Additionally, if someone tragically dies in a car accident as a result of another’s negligence, the decedent’s family may be entitled to bring a wrongful death lawsuit, to seek recovery for their particular losses. After a devastating accident, it is important to contact a local injury attorney as soon as possible in order to preserve and protect your rights.
According to an article in the Cape Code Times, the man, who was vacationing in the United States from Israel, was heading west (“off-Cape”) in a minivan with five other passengers at the time of the accident. Police reports indicate that a third vehicle heading east on the bridge allegedly set off a chain of events that ultimately caused the accident. That vehicle, described as a dark colored pick-up truck, struck another pick-up, also heading east. The impact of the sideswipe pushed that truck across the median and into the path of the man’s minivan, which was heading west on Route 6, coming over the Sagamore Bridge.
Immediately after the accident, the police issued an alert to law enforcement to keep an eye out for a dark-colored pick-up truck with a great deal of front-end damage — headed toward Cape Cod. The accident caused the road to be shut down in both directions. And reports indicate that the police are still searching for the driver who caused the accident that also injured five other people.
In this case, the news reports suggest that the hit-and-run driver set in motion a chain of events that caused the accident and ultimately the man’s death, as well as the other victims’ injuries. When an innocent accident victim seeks to bring a personal injury action against a defendant or defendants, it is crucial to know – as precisely as possible – what caused the accident. There are many possible causes for car accidents: 1) was distracted driving an issue (was the driver texting, talking on a cell phone or simply “checking” their smartphone); 2) was the driver otherwise impaired – due to alcohol or drugs; 3) did the driver run a red light; 4) did another car sideswipe or rear-end the car; and 5) was there some mechanical malfunction, such as a blown out tire or some faulty engine problem?
Hiring an attorney with experience handling car accidents cases is the right place to start. With such experience comes the ability to determine – at the beginning – how much of a recovery an accident victim would be entitled to. Often, insurance companies try to settle a claim as quickly as possible, and for the least amount possible. An experienced, local injury attorney would be able to advise a claimant as to the fairest and most appropriate settlement he or she could expect under the circumstances.
