Consumer Product Safety Commission Issues Recalls Due to Fire Hazard Concerns

The Law Offices of John C. Manoog III

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the federal agency in charge of protecting the public from unsafe consumer products such as toys, household furnishings, and tools. When the CPSC believes that a particular product poses a hazard, it has the authority to issue a recall. Hazards may be fire, electrical, chemical, and/or mechanical in nature. Recently, the CPSC issued several product recalls in which the purported danger was fire.

Consumers have a right to be free from defective products such as those called back by the CPSC. Unfortunately, injuries and even deaths happen from defective product design, improper construction or assembly, faulty labeling, and/or the failure to issue adequate safety warnings. If you have been injured by a defective product, Cape Cod products liability attorney John C. Manoog, III can help.

Coleman Lantern Recalled After Two Lanterns Caught Fire

Northstar® Liquid Fuel Lanterns, which were sold by the Coleman Company, Inc., were recalled due to an incorrect gas feed tube being installed on the lantern. It is possible that the tube can release more fuel than necessary when lit. If this happens, the lantern presents fire and burn hazards. The product was sold in sporting goods stores nationwide and online at coleman.com from November 2013 to February 2014. More information about this and other recalls is available on the CPSC website. Gree Humidifiers Can Overheat, Causing Serious Fire and Burn Hazards

Dehumidifiers made by Gree were originally recalled in September 2013, but a reannouncement was made after the number of reported incidents increased by nearly 400 percent. Over 120 fires have been reported due to the humidifiers overheating, causing around $4.5 million in property damages. About 2.5 million units were sold in the United States, along with an additional 55,000 in Canada.

The brand names on the humidifiers include, but are not limited to, Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore, Premiere, and Seabreeze. They were sold at retailers across the United States and Canada, including stores such as Sam’s Club, Lowe’s, Sears, and Wal-Mart, from January 2005 through August 2013. They were also sold online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com.

Marlboro Promotional Flashlight Recalled Due to Burn and Injury Hazards

A 3-in-1 flashlight, compass, and match holder that was distributed exclusively through a Marlboro cigarette promotion was recalled after it was discovered that matches inside the match holder section of the product can ignite when it makes contact with a striker pad located under the compass cap. If this happens, burns and possibly other injuries can result. There have been 11 reports of the matches igniting. In two of these cases, the product exploded, causing burns. The product was distributed nationwide from January 2014 through March 2014.
